Who we are and what we are doing

Connecting the Coast is the communications platform for both the complementary Maroochy Clever Networks Project and Noosa Clever Networks Projects.

The Project is facilitating the development of enhanced telecommunications infrastructure across the Sunshine Coast Region in the form of the following:
  •  A high speed broadband wireless network using WiMax with 7 Base Stations:
    • Caloundra
    • Point Cartwright
    • Sippy Downs
    • Buderim
    • Sunshine Coast Airport
    • Noosa Heads
    • Black Mountain
  • Construction of an Optic Fibre Trunk
    • Cooroy (5km)
    • Palmwoods to Maroochydore via Sippy Downs (29km)
  • Data centre at Cooroy
  • Backhaul to the Brisbane via QRail from Interconnect Points at Cooroy and Palmwoods (required completing the network connection to the Internet & Telecommunications connections).

The capital construction works above are all now completed and the network is operational.

Connecting the Coast is supported by $4.75 million of funding from the Australian Government under the Clever Networks ISD program and $7.5 million from regional partners the Sunshine Coast Council, the University of the Sunshine Coast, Allegro Networks and Mach Technology.

The program has the capacity to reach over half of the Sunshine Coast population and potentially half of the 32,000 businesses on the Coast. The program supports industry diversification and the transition to more knowledge-based sectors of the economy, reducing reliance on traditional industries for employment and growth.

Through the Connecting the Coast project, Council has contributed funding, leadership and partnership building to facilitate connectivity to high speed broadband and Internet solution capability into the Sunshine Coast region which will:
  • deliver a critical enabler of the growing knowledge economy
  • help small and home based businesses operate like big business and globally
  • build world class telecommunications on the coast
  • ensure the community has real options for competition and next generation services.

Council is responsible for the delivery of an Education and Communication Plan as a part of the Maroochy and Noosa Clever Networks Projects. This website is the main communications platform for the Education and Communications objective of the project.

The construction phase of the telecommunications infrastructure is now complete and the network has become operational.
